As Chairman and CEO, Candace Kendle has provided the overall vision and strategy to grow Kendle into a leading, global clinical research organization (CRO). Under her leadership, the company has advanced to become one of the largest providers of early- to late-stage clinical development solutions for the world's biopharmaceutical industry, with operations across North America, Europe, Asia/Pacific, Latin America and Africa.
In a market growing at 13-15.6% annually, Dr. Kendle's focus has been on positioning the company to compete at the highest level for large global clinical development programs. In support of this effort, she led Kendle through a strategic transformation in 2006 with the acquisition of the Phase II-IV Clinical Services business of Charles River Laboratories, increasing the company's size by 50 percent and strengthening its position as one of the leading global players in the CRO industry. The successful integration, completed in 2007, has provided Kendle with much greater scale and competitiveness in conducting "megatrials" the fastest-growing segment of the market. Demonstrating the company's enhanced ability to deliver against customer needs, Kendle was named "Top CRO to Work With" in the Thomson CenterWatch 2007 Survey of U.S. Investigative Sites and "Best Contract Research Organization" in both 2006 and 2007 by an independent panel for Scrip World Pharmaceutical News.
Dr. Kendle is a recognized leader in the CRO industry. She is a founding member and Past Chair (2006) of the Association of Clinical Research Organizations (ACRO), which fosters continued advancement of medical product development and expedites the introduction of new medicines and new treatments to improve health and save lives.
Dr. Kendle is a member of the Harvard Business School Alumni Association Board and a member of the Committee of 200, an organization of preeminent women entrepreneurs and corporate leaders. She has received numerous civic, financial and pharmaceutical industry leadership awards.
Prior to founding the company, Dr. Kendle held senior faculty positions in the pharmaceutical programs of several leading institutions. More recently, she has played a key role in the development of the Master of Science program in global drug development at the University of Cincinnati.
Christopher C. Bergen, MBA
Christopher Bergen co-founded Kendle in 1981 and has served as a Director and President and Chief Operating Officer since its incorporation in 1997.
As COO, Mr. Bergen is leading our infrastructure expansion to support the company's projected future growth and drive improved global connectivity. Currently he provides leadership for the company's global Enterprise Resource Planning initiative, Project Management Office and Commercial Operations.
Prior to Kendle, Mr. Bergen served in various capacities at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, ending his tenure as Associate Vice President.
Robert R. Buck
Robert R. Buck was re-appointed as a director of Kendle in June 2003. Mr. Buck previously served as a director of the company from 1998 through August 2002. He currently serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Beacon Roofing Supply, Inc. Prior to joining Beacon, Mr. Buck served in a number of management and senior management positions with Cintas Corporation from 1982 through January 2003, most recently as President of its Uniform Rental Division.
G. Steven Geis, PhD, MD, has served as a director of Kendle since November 2002. Now retired, Dr. Geis served in a number of senior R&D positions with Pharmacia & Upjohn Company from 1985 to July 2002, most recently as Group Vice President: Arthritis, Cardiovascular and Oncology Clinical Development. He currently operates his own consulting firm assisting biopharmaceutical companies with their drug development programs. Dr. Geis has authored or co-authored numerous journal articles covering several therapeutic areas.
Donald C. Harrison, MD,has served as a director of Kendle since November 2001. He is Senior Vice President and Provost for Health Affairs Emeritus at University of Cincinnati. Dr. Harrison formerly served as the Senior Vice President and Provost for Health Affairs at University of Cincinnati from 1986 through 2002 and also served as the Chief Executive Officer of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He also is a practicing cardiologist on a part-time basis. Dr. Harrison's professional experience includes 26 years at Stanford University School of Medicine and Stanford University Hospital, where he was Chief of Cardiology from 1967 to 1968. He is past national President of the American Heart Association and has served as a director for several not-for-profit organizations. Dr. Harrison also serves as a director for start-up medical device and biotechnology companies, including UMD, Inc., Medical Education and Consultation Inc.; AtriCure, Inc.; and EnteroMedics, Inc. Since 2004, he has been a general partner in Charter Life Sciences, a California-based venture capital firm, for which he manages the Cincinnati office.
Timothy E. Johnson, PhD, has served as a director of Kendle since November 2002. Dr. Johnson is a Professor of Finance at the University of Cincinnati and a Financial and Investment Consultant, serving as President of Johnson Investment Counsel, Inc. since 1965. Johnson Investment Counsel, Inc. is a registered investment adviser with the Securities and Exchange Commission (the "Commission") and manages portfolio assets for endowments, foundations, corporations, individuals and pension and profit sharing plans. Dr. Johnson serves as a director or trustee for several civic and nonprofit organizations. He has written several textbooks and articles on investment and financial management.
Frederick A. Russ, PhD, has served as a director of Kendle since November 2002. Dr. Russ is Senior Vice Provost at the University of Cincinnati, a position he has held since 2004. Prior to that he served for 10 years as Dean of the College of Business for the university. He previously served as non-executive Chairman of the Board of Charles & Colvard, Ltd. [CTHR], a manufacturer and distributor of moissanite jewels for use in jewelry sold around the world, and remains on its Board of Directors. Dr. Russ also serves as a director of the Economics Center for Education & Research and is a former member of
the board of Cree [CREE], an advanced materials company he helped found, and Techsolve, a not-for-profit serving manufacturing clients. He has co-authored three textbooks and numerous articles on marketing strategy and the behavior of consumers and sales personnel.
